  some
  days I
   watch you
 rise and rage
with a new year
firework fervour–
untamed and glorious,
pulling the years together
with  a snap of  your fingers.
but some days you are languid,
stretching like the summer dusting
of freckles along your forearms, the
slumberous strands of hair shuttering
your sky-eyes from the morning light.
on these days, I think the earth spins
slower and the birds sing a little
quieter. on these days, I look
at you and I think:
sundrop.
you need to have a plan...so here's to
conventional wisdom.
1. relocate
to some forgotten shore.
2. fall desperately in love with
     i. the ocean
     ii. the sky
     iii. the honey sunrise and
     iv. the steelgray winter dawn.
3. sink
soul-deep into the water and
breathe.
4a. search out the requisite words
     i. from behind white and blue curtains
     ii. and underneath clam shells
     iii. and in the wakes of fishing boats, and
4b. pluck them from the ceaseless
scrawls of sunlight
against the slopes of waves.
5. make time for
     i. poetry
     ii. and other
        selfish
        pursuits.
BeliefBelief

She tells him the child is not his.
The old women mutter and cluck
as they slap wet cloth against river stones.
He wraps his arms around his chest as though he fears
he will also sprout with child. "A dove,"
he quietly asks? She points to a blood spot
on her cheek. "He pecked me here." It still hurts
when she touches it. It always hurts.
He loves the child, the cuckold's hatchling. He loves his lying wife.
But he knows she lies. When the old men stumble
into the stable, beards matted, coarse as grain,
he simply mutters, "Drunks," bad wine, betrayal.
One afternoon as he saws cedar planks, sawdust thick as pollen,
an angel catches his

a womb
AtlantisOur ships float close under sunlit skies,
hovering above Atlantis.
We claimed the ocean miles as our own,
an underwater district which we would call home.

Drown.
Suffocate with Neptune,
as heavens burst through violet haze.
Your gaze,
splits the nebula, infinite space,
and explosions in a faraway place.

And when the sun should close its eyes,
you'll sail afar.
To climb electric vines,
and lay in the arms of the storm.
white noiseThe only thing that seems to keep the world out of my head these days
is white noise
it's a rush of excitedly flapping wings
it's nothing you could grasp but a sound and a colour that is none
I try to keep the world out
(she is playing her music too loud too much these days)
and I think of you, ears buzzing with white noises until they ache.
And I catch myself thinking
I wish you were my white noise -
the sound in between my heartbeats,
the same words whispered so close to my ear they sound like beautiful little secrets,
the rock I cling to when the waves crash violently all around me to keep from drowning, I wish you were
my home, my favourite pair of arms, my heart, my safe place, the one to soothe my mind.
I wish you were so many more things
than just far away and as impossible to touch
as white noise.
compositionshe fell in love with words, never people-
people breathe and run and can cut her to the bone;
they're dangerous, deadly, violent,
but it was people that she knew best.

i am made of little, brittle bird bones and shattering skies,
i've got the skin of snakes, of wilting flowers,
of broken mirrors without the shine,

i'm trying to be a bit more honest,
but it's not like you can tell the difference between
my endless melodies and the vindictive, cutting words
that roll from my mouth-

they're not that much different.
pearlescentyou are as pearlescent as a paua shell
soft, pretty, glimmer-changing.

like a fish, a silver-quick fish
darting, shifting, every moment you are new.

rippling, iridescent colours
sliding joyously and gleamingly over you and

around you, kissing you with fragments of light
here, there, gone.

quick as a flash you are.
Dandelion's Lamentthe warm spring wind
gives me life
no one desires to defend;

they call me Weed,
stomping me down
to the level of Crabgrass
and Poison Oak,

although I harm none
with my meager
existence.

I can grant your wishes
as your cold breath
sends shivers down my
stem; I can

thrive on the dream-fields
of children, who still
call me Flower.
I took offMy day off.
I stand in sunlight
without asking.
I can watch it being day.

The mud is soft and cool at home.
I'd bury well without a casket,
I’ll be a naked pill for earth.

I build a garden box from wood,
smash my thumb.
Red bell
peppers;
too late for lettuce.

I had a premonition
I would live like this.
No one will remember me.
I’ll forget by Tuesday.
Dead Bird HeartI never noticed the way ash looks like feathers.

I become aware of the shores where my body
folds to meet itself, doubles over so that my hair
seems to grow like roots into the ground

keeping me from ever lifting my head again.

Of all the things she told me, she missed this one:
what to do with the ashes.

Hers is a dead bird heart—
grey-haired and grey-feathered.
She is paler than she has any right to be,
ashen—

But her eyes are open, and she can see the sky
where a roof once was.
MuselingRed wine rambles
curdle the air, but still
you dream; half-moon
body curled in the

lamp light. I am leaving,
I am leaving, choking on
some holy word—
the floorboards creak,

a sonata for my
changeling shadow
whilst you, hair tangled upon
the pillow, are spun gold.
BalanceThe Harmony of Yin and Yang
Balance
Yin
Shadow held in light
Pearl moon singing silently
Dreaming in the night
Yin-Yang
Night slowly fading
Daylight quietly blooming
Clouds sailing along
Yang
Flickering candle
Illuminating the path
Opening the dark
My Mouth, a GraveyardI buried my words
under my tongue
& turned my teeth
into tombstones.

Here lies hello,
too shy to be uttered,
just left to wither
while my fingers tapped out
its letters,

& here lies goodbye,
so scared of being alone,
it left the roads between
me and we empty.

Love died the day my
heart started beating,
when it pumped out
too much sense &
not enough courage.

Sorry was found murdered,
its meaning stolen,
the day it would have been
relevant.

I smothered help with my claims
that I didn’t need it,
then I forgot how to breathe
& no one could see it.

My mouth became a cemetery,
& I chewed on petals
to keep the smell away,
but no matter
a lover's observations.when you asked me to define love,
i answered with this.

love is
i. a collection of sighs
   strung together
   by remembered dreams
   and rapid heartbeats

ii. fingertips on knuckles
   and the hugging of thumbs

iii. making silverware
    on the mattress
    in the company of the stars

iv. exchanging dialogue
    with our mouths shut
    and our eyes open

v. cheekbones and crow's feet

vi. turning every what if
    into a reality
when i asked you to describe love,
you took the answer from my mouth
with your lips.

This was inspired by #lacoterie 's poetry prompt for February 2013: Write a poem that fits the title "Translation".

I wanted to write three poems in one: a poem in English and Spanish, a poem in English, and a poem in Spanish. If you speak both languages and you understand the whole thing, great! If not, I hoped the words from each language would sound beautiful.

You can read just the English words:

Her hips swayed,
and I held her.
We danced by moonlight,
and the rest of the world faded.

Just the Spanish words:

bailando
en mis brazos,
admirando las estrellas
a la noche.

Which translates:

Dancing
in my arms,
admiring the stars
at night.

Or, if you put them together, the whole poem would translate:

Her hips swayed, dancing,
and I held her in my arms.
We danced by moonlight, admiring the stars,
and the rest of the world faded into the night.

I guess you could say this is my attempt to keep working on Spanish, since I'm no longer taking classes. It took me a minute to remember the word brazos (arms). I don't want to lose it. I worked hard to learn it. :noes:

I'm also counting this as today's Glory Be. :heart:

Congratulations on the DLD, this is such a clever poem. Despite only half recognising what the Spanish meant initially, it has a wonderful rhythm to it. This amazes me, I've never seen three poems in one before :)
