i would like to create a word
for what one feels
when they realize:
if we were birds, the only cage
we would be in
are the ones
we create ourselves. how many times

Of course, there isn’t time
for making lists
when salt and cold are working their way in
to the small, sad pocket of air that is
you.
And as you scrabble at the sea,
as if you could scrape air into your lungs,
you do not stop to watch the bubbles
that tumble from your lips,
nor do you smile at the ease with which they rise
while you yourself drift ever gloomwards.
You do, perhaps, register the sting inside you,
the emptiness where oxygen should be,
but you do not appreciate the sturdy weight of water
nor the distant pulsing sunlight,
beams of it spiking through the waves.
